One question that we get asked frequently when individuals reach out looking for help with substance use disorder is “How do I know if I need detox?” At Compass Recovery, our certified drug and alcohol professionals can work with you to determine the appropriate level of care as you set out on your recovery journey.
Long-term use of habit-forming substances like alcohol, opioids, and benzodiazepines can cause physical dependence. If an individual has been using habit-forming substances on a daily basis, we strongly encourage that they seek medical detox at an accredited facility. Cold-turkey detox is very dangerous and can result in severe complications, and even death.
Symptoms of alcohol withdrawal can include shakiness, anxiety, nausea, vomiting, insomnia, and, in extreme circumstances, delirium tremens and seizures. Symptoms of early opioid withdrawal can include anxiety, muscle aches, restless legs, runny nose, sneezing, teary eyes, sweating and insomnia. Advanced opioid withdrawal includes stomach cramps, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. Benzodiazepine withdrawal includes anxiety, lack of concentration, insomnia, muscle spasms, panic and nausea. More severe benzodiazepine withdrawal symptoms include seizures, hallucination, panic and even suicidal ideations. These symptoms are not only extremely uncomfortable, but can also be life threatening, and it is essential that you seek out medical care immediately so that you can be properly evaluated and cared for.
